The Nine Best National Pavilions at the Venice Biennale

Mikenelson1027

Over the weekend, the organizers of the 54th Venice Biennale announced the winner of the highly anticipated Golden Lion award for best national pavilion at the international art summit, with that coveted honor going to Germany for its moving display of work by the late performance artist and inveterate experimentalist Christoph Schlingensief. (German art star Gerhard Richter had criticized the choice of Schlingensief, calling it a "scandal" and an indication of the "decline of painting" — so the prize comes as a serious vindication). But of course, the German show is just one of many dozens of national displays on view in the Giardini and throughout the City of Bridges. Watch — 'Economy of Desire' featured @ArtwalkTV | "Very important work." "Haunting!" #performance #art #film

Economy of Desire, Chapter III is a short film by Marcus Brooks and Bryan Reyna about the falsity of the fiat money systems and the deceptions of the current economic system.

NOTE FROM KIM:

It's my pleasure to welcome Bryan Reyna to the ArtwalkTV Community. Bryan and I have shared art links on the net since the early days of social media and of course, some of us are connected to him through his work at MoMa.

During exhibition changes and renovation projects at the museum, you have no doubt enjoyed Bryan's behind-the-scenes photography. Now, we are granted the brilliant opportunity to discover his works in short film and performance art.

I find 'Economy of Desire' starkly beautiful and, at times, slightly difficult to watch. If art is to do it's job, then it needs to move you from the inside. In this regard, 'Economy of Desire' is very important work. It's quite visceral. I highly recommend sharing it with your friends, especially those who are interested in art and it's ability to move people and shake things up!

Connect with Bryan at Posterous & Twitter.

“I encourage EVERYONE to see the world as a painting! Look for colour, not criticism. Look for shapes and tone, not race. Look for beauty, not cynical distress. And, above all see the light out of all the dark.” – Cagney King

Cagney writes, "It is funny how life will lift you up on its wings allowing you to soar to new heights one day, but then leave you mid-air to fall, crash and wait to die. Some people are lucky. They endure happiness and their climb from a fall is much shorter. [...] For me my art has always been the friend that never went away, the lawn that never needs mowed, the roof that never leaks, and it will never remind me of what time it is. It will just be with me and take me on journeys of discovery. [Continue reading]

LOS ANGELES -- Paul Chatem at Dialect. A mini-review. #Artwalk

After previewing Fox's beautifully crafted new 'Lone Star' last night, I had the pleasure of meeting artist Paul Chatem at Dialect during the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk.

These days, Paul's work consists of darkly surreal and finely-tuned narrative paintings. The objects are made from painted wood and often contain a "crankshaft and gears" interactive element.

"The art is meant to be touched," says Chatem. That is the "whole point." In fact, you can't help but touch the patina surfaced handle that sets the gears in motion.

Rich with symbolism that is at once disturbing and yet subtly seductive, I found a bit of comfort in the brilliant compositions in what might otherwise be a chaotic representation of one's darkest fears and desires.

In Chatem's edgy tableaux, themes of death collide with sexy industialized nostalgia. Grim, surly men with circus-like mustaches meet up with loose women, booze, and trainwrecks. More than anything, I enjoy Chatem's style and the delightfully raw experience of glancing into a pyche that sort of winks back at you.
